The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) on Monday issued a notice to the Tihar jail administration over the “delay in execution” of the accused in the Nirbhaya gang rape case.
“The Supreme Court in July 2018, rejected the review petition filed by the accused against capital punishment. Two months have been passed since their petition was rejected but their execution has not taken place,” the women’s commission said in a statement.
Seeking information on the order authorising the execution of the death sentence, the letter to the administration further read: “If an order has not been issued, please provide reasons for non-compliance of the same.”
‘Fear of law’
Asking the authorities to provide the information by September 15, DCW chairperson Swati Maliwal said: “There appears to be hardly any fear of law in the minds of perpetrators. Therefore, it is extremely crucial that the death sentence awarded to the rapists of Nirbhaya is executed at the earliest in order to create a strong deterrence in society.”
