McLaren F1 Boss Admits 2018 Car Is Bad, Promises Return To Form In 2020

According to McLaren’s F1 boss Zak Brown, the MCL33 is “an extremely poor race car”, one that’s unlikely to make any jumps in terms of performance for the remainder of the 2018 season.

McLaren’s form this year has been so poor, they haven’t even managed to qualify inside the top 10 since Monaco, and have secured points in just three of their last nine races. The only reason why they’re currently sixth instead of seventh in the Constructor Standings is because Force India had to forfeit all of their points.

When asked by Autosport whether he thought his team could bounce back before the end of this season, Brown stated: “We’ll continue to push on this car but unfortunately we’ve produced an extremely poor race car that is not that responsive to changes, which will tell you that inherently we don’t have a good race car.”

“I would expect, unfortunately, similar types of results – maybe a little more circuit-specific – over the balance of the year. I certainly wouldn’t expect any miracles.”

The McLaren CEO went on to admit that other teams have out-developed his outfit, making it seem as if they’ve gone backwards in terms of development – something that’s actually evident chassis-wise.

As for when McLaren fans can expect a return to form, the answer appears to be no sooner than two years from now.

“I’m very confident of the people we have inside McLaren, that we have a good plan,” added Brown. “2019 should be an interim step forward and we probably won’t be at our full capacity of technical capability until our 2020 car.”
