Surat: Mystery shrouds the death of Taekwondo champion from the city in a hotel in Bharuch on Sunday. Bharuch police suspect that Ankit Singh, 22, had committed suicide due to a failed love affair.
Singh, a resident of Umiyanagar Society in Pandesara, was found hanging from the ceiling fan in his room of the hotel, police said. He was Taekwondo champion of Gujarat and had participated in the state-level competition last year too.
Hotel management told police that Singh had booked the room on Sunday morning and ordered food in the afternoon. When he did not open the door, the staff informed the management. He was found hanging from the ceiling fan after the door of the room was opened with master key by the hotel staff.
Prakash Patil, police sub-inspector of Maktumpura police station, told TOI, “We recovered Aadhaar card and driving licence of the deceased and immediately informed Pandesara police station in Surat about suicide by the young man. Surat police contacted his family members and they reached Bharuch immediately. His body was handed over to them after postmortem at the civil hospital in Bharuch.”
Patil said family members took the body to Surat for cremation. They demanded forensic postmortem of the body to know the exact cause of Singh’s death, saying he would never commit suicide.
“Forensic postmortem on the body was done in Surat and it too found that he had died due to hanging. This proves that the deceased had committed suicide. However, we are tracing call details of the deceased’s phone number because we suspect Singh had committed suicide over a failed love affair,” Patil added.
