West Bengal to cut petrol & diesel prices by Re 1 per litre

A day after Congress led Bharat Bandh protesting against the rise of petrol price, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee announced a Re 1 reduction in fuel prices in West Bengal. Claiming that the state had never increased any tax on fuel, the chief minister demanded withdrawal of central cess on fuel. Adding that despite facing an acute financial crisis, her government is ready to reduce government tax in fuel to provide some relief to the common people, Banerjee said that some state governments are however, ‘reducing price as elections are due in those states’.

Significantly, Banerjee had taken major political decisions on the issue of petrol price hike earlier also. One of her most important decisions regarding the issue of price rise is of course her act of pulling out of the UPA II in 2012 leaving the government as a minority one.

However, her government took all necessary efforts to foil the Bandh on Monday, called by Congress and CPM combine in the state citing huge financial loss, caused by strikes.

Trinamool Congress in a statement said that the party supports the issue, but does not support strike. So, the party decided to take out protest rallies on the day and it was led by TMC MP and chief minister’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee. Banerjee at Nabanna said that Congress leader Ahmed Patel called her two days before the strike and sought her support. “Ahmed Patel called me after deciding on the strike.

He sought our support. But I clearly told him that we support the issue, but not the strike. We have always been against the culture of calling strikes. This cannot be a form of protest. We took out protest rallies to have the Opposition’s unity in place,” said Banerjee.
