Carney to remain at Bank of England until 2020

Mark Carney will remain at the helm of the Bank of England through January 2020, U.K. Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond announced Tuesday. Carney had been set to step down as governor in June 2019, but was last week asked by members of parliament if he would consider remaining in his post beyond that date. Carney had told U.K. lawmakers that he was willing to extend his stay in order to provide stability as the U.K. moves through the process of exiting from the European Union. Jon Cunliffe, deputy governor of the Bank of England with responsibility for financial stability was also re-appointed, effective from 1 November 2018. The British pound GBPUSD, -0.0921% was off 0.1% versus the dollar to trade at $1.3018.
