Hubballi: Hackathon, the new way of hiring engineering graduates, will soon enter the twin cities.
Amid concern over several reports indicating the lack of employable skills among engineering students in the country, software companies are slowly giving up their old methods of hiring of conducting tests and multiple interviews and instead hiring freshers through online coding platforms.

At a time when hiring through hackathons at engineering colleges in metropolitan cities like Bengaluru is still a new thing, a similar codethon planned on a university campus has elated the academic community in the twin cities.

World’s leading smartphone manufacturer Samsung will conduct a codethon at KLE Technological University on September 29.

Meena S Maralappanavar, head of the department of computer science and engineering at the university, told TOI that software companies are holding hackathons to hire the best.

“It helps make students global standard coders. The codethon which will be held at the university will help students get internship at Samsung,” she said.

A college source told TOI that one might know how to design algorithms, analyse solutions, implement and solve problems with all the tools and resources available.

“But the competitive programming world has a lot of other challenges which need more than routine thinking. A great way to improve coding skills is by solving coding challenges. To be an effective software engineer one of the important skill is to understand and solve large, complex and poorly defined problems,” they said.

“The computing world has a lot of challenging problems that need to be solved and they go beyond traditional algorithmic thinking. Making code efficient and cosmetic demands perseverance and that can be only mastered through extensive problem solving. Industries have started hiring based on competitions conducted and hosted on online platforms. It has been effective means to locate talent all around the globe,” they added.

“Conducting collaborated codethon is yet another model for the tech industry to pick the required talent from the available pool,” sources said.

The codethon will be hosted on Codechef, a competitive programming website. The challenge is said to be the first of its kind in North Karnataka region.
