Canberra Now: Inquiry launched at ACT Health and Qbn cop shortage

Good morning Canberra.

Don't be fooled by the early morning fog, it will be a balmy 22 degrees today in the capital as we leave winter far behind us.

But, whether you're saying farewell to the Canberra chill with a smile or a sneeze (depending on your allergies), why not catch up on today's main headlines? (There's pictures of a cheetah cub, I promise.)

Inquiry launched into culture at ACT Health

After months of pressure around bullying allegations, health minister Meegan Fitzharris has announced an independent review into ACT Health.

But she stopped short of implementing a full board of inquiry, as has been called for by the Australian Medical Association and the Canberra Liberals.

'So stretched they're drowning': Understaffed police struggle with ice

The NSW police union has issued a grim warning about staff shortages over the border as Queanbeyan cops struggle to tackle epidemic levels of ice addiction.

The union has called for an extra 48 officers in the Monaro region to help the "stretched" force on the ground.

It follows revelations in The Canberra Times earlier this year that up to a quarter of police in the Queanbeyan area were off duty due to a string of suspensions, illnesses and retirements.

'Didn't think it was possible': 10 new affordable homes for Throsby

Seven years ago, Christine Van was struggling to find somewhere to live. Yesterday, she was given the keys to her very first home.

Ms Van's family were the first to move in as part of the ACT government's land rent scheme, which gives low-to-moderate income households the option of renting land rather than buying it to build a home.

Delivered through Community Housing Canberra, the scheme reduces the initial cost of entering the housing market as well as mortgage payments.

No bull: Canberra's growing biltong business

Rugby players are investing and an economist standing by to make this home-grown biltong business big news.

But just what is a biltong anyway?

According to our resident foodie Karen Hardy, the preserved meat snack is packed with protein and popular with outdoor adventurers.

International agreement struck at Canberra zoo

Solo the cheetah cub presided over proceedings yesterday as zoos from Canberra, Wellington and Singapore struck their first agreement on wildlife conservation.

ACT chief minister Andrew Barr and our reporter Han Nguyen were also in attendance. Read the story (and coo over pictures of Solo) here.
