The clean-up programme initiated by the Ernakulam district administration in flood-ravaged areas of the district remained unaffected by the dawn-to-dusk hartal on Monday.
During the day, about 30 truckloads of non-biodegradable waste were collected from various local bodies and shifted to the waste collection centre. The authorities have already completed about 60% of the post-floods clean-up programme. About 99.9% of houses affected by the floods have been cleaned up so far.
Meanwhile, the district administration has opened a new centre at Kalamassery for dumping non-biodegradable waste collected from the flood-affected regions. The property was identified as the existing collection centres at Brahmapuram and Ambalamedu ran out of capacity. To expedite the collection of waste, four nodal officers have been appointed. The district has already completed the collection of organic waste from all panchayats in Ernakulam.
