Muharram marks the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar and the is believed to be the second most holy month in Islam, after Ramadan. It is celebrated specifically on the 10th day, also called Ashura, of the month of Muharram itself. This year Ashura falls on 21st September. It can also be said to be a ceremonial mourning period as it marks the anniversary of the battle of karbala when the Prophet’s grandson Imam Hussein Ibn Ali was killed.
