Dr Mane informed that a death certificate provides legal protection for families and is a vital tool for government to deliver data driven health policies
The Medical and Health Information Management Association – MaHIMA in collaboration with State Bureau of Health Intelligence (SBHI), Public Health Department, Government of Maharashtra jointly undertook a training cum CME for doctors in and around the city recently in Mumbai. This programme was organised by Holy Family Hospital and Teaching Institute.
This training session was specially designed for general physicians and junior doctors in order for them to benefit and improve the documentation done in medico legal cases and cause of death certification. Training was also designed for Medical Records Professionals to enhance their understanding of ICD codes for the cause of death and other diagnosis. Physicians benefitted from this training too providing them with greater flexibility and ways to improve the quality of medical documentation.
More than 150 doctors attended the training along with staff nurses from Holy Family Hospital and medical record officers from various hospitals.
Dr Tanaji H Mane, Dy Director, SBHI provided training to the physicians. Dr Mane on this occasion told that a death certificate is more than a piece of paper – it provides legal protection for families and is a vital tool for government and policymakers to develop and deliver data driven health policies. Hence, it is important to write the cause of death and underlying disease in a proper and correct manner.
Dr Niraj Uttamani, Medical Director of Holy Family Hospital said, “It is essential that physicians are empowered with necessary knowledge and training for them to issue an accurate medically certified cause of death certificate.”
Sameer Mhatre, Medical Records Officer, Holy Family Hospital and Secretary of MaHIMA, Nilesh Panchal, CEO Krish Micro and Executive Director MaHIMA had successfully managed the entire process of this training session.
Dr M Wasim Ghori, Healthcare Entrepreneur, Brand Ambassador, Education UK, British Council and Executive Director, MaHIMA said, “We will continue to provide such type of training sessions to family doctors in the future at various locations in Mumbai.”
Dr Dnyaneshwar Avhad, Surveillance Officer, WHO and Mumbai President-MaHIMA further explained in detail the work, strategies and the mission and vision of the association.
