At least six major smart city projects worth ₹438 crore are likely to be cleared this week by Chennai Smart City, taking the total cost of the projects to ₹1,000 crore.
The meeting of the Board of Chennai Smart City Limited scheduled on Wednesday will be crucial as the civic officials are in a scramble to meet the deadline set by the Union Government this month for finalising projects for the entire ₹1,000 crore allocated for the five-year period. The share of the Union Government and State governments would be ₹500 crore each.
“We will upload all the projects online. The officials of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs will start tracking the progress of the smart city projects,” said an official of Chennai Corporation.
Major projects to be cleared this week include smart roads in all bus routes in T. Nagar, 24x7 water supply for all residents in T.Nagar, smart metering for power supply in T.Nagar, installation of 5 tonne capacity biogas plants using water hyacinth in waterbodies, storm water drain missing links and group monitoring and dimming of LED for bus routes.
According to Corporation officials, the civic body has completed only five smart city projects at a cost of ₹15.60 crore. Last month, the civic body had completed three projects. The conversion of sodium vapour lamp streetlights to LED lights was completed at ₹3.44 crore. Namma Chennai App was completed at ₹10 lakh to redress civic grievances in the city. Work on development of 28 smart class rooms were completed at ₹1.75 crore. Work on eight parks and waste water recycling plants have been completed this month. The bicycle lanes have also been completed at a cost of ₹36 lakh this month.
GIS project
The Corporation has been able to complete just 77.31% of the GIS project using drone survey of the city. The civic body has covered 386 sq. km. of the city so far.
Similarly, 18 projects, estimated at ₹344 crore, are under way. But many of them, such as roof top solar, are expected to be completed only by September 2019. The work on pilot project of on-street parking management system is under way.
