LUDHIANA: Deserted by her NRI husband 36 years back, Pritam Kaur of Waraich village in Ludhiana has never skipped a court hearing in the past 16 years, hoping that she would get to see her husband and get all her legal rights of being his wife before she dies.
Her battle had also been to prove that she is the legal wife of Dhandari resident, who relocated to Canada in 1982.

Accusing her NRI husband of solemnising second marriage without divorcing her Pritam Kaur on Monday filed a fresh complaint with the NRI wing of Punjab Police and NRI Commission, Chandigarh. In her complaint the 63-year-old alleged that some of her husband's friends were stopping her from entering her in laws' house now.

Pritam Kaur says she got married to a farmer of Dhandari Kalan in 1977 and things looked good till 1982 when her husband decided to go abroad. Her husband's elder brother was already settled in Canada.

"I got pregnant after marriage, but my husband convinced me to go for abortion stating that it can create problem for me to go abroad with him. First five years of marriage was a golden period for me. However, as soon as he reached Canada, he became a different man. He stopped talking to me. However, his mother, father and younger brother were very supportive."

"Later we found that he had married his sister-in-law (wife of elder brother) to go to Canada. We all were shocked to hear this. Even in that situation, my in-laws supported me. They made every possible effort to bring him back, but to no avail. In 2002 with the support of my mother-in-law, I moved a local court in Ludhiana against the injustice," shared Pritam Kaur.

Pritam's father-in-law expired in 2002. And she lost her mother-in-law, her biggest support, soon after.

"Cousins of my husband somehow convinced me to go back to my parents' house as I was alone there," she said.
