CHENNAI: State president of the BJP Tamilisai Soundararajan on Tuesday urged Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami to intervene and relax “unnecessary restrictions” on erecting idols on the occasion of Vinyagar Chathurthi.
According to her, Vinayagar Chathuri is becoming a festival of social harmony as people from other religions are participating in the celebrations.

The government has brought in new set of rules and regulations in erecting the idols. The festival committee members should obtain a no objection certificate (NOC) from the land owner where the idol is going to be installed, Tangedco, local body, PWD, fire service station, TN Pollution Control Board, fire and rescue service and revenue department.

The set of NOCs should be submitted to the respective police station and obtain permission to erect the idol. It should be followed in every place in the state. The government has also laid down around 20 rules and regulations for the festival.

Hitherto, the Hindu outfits and public had been permitted to erect the statues after getting NOC from the respective revenue divisional officer and police station.

“It is difficult to get permission from all these departments within a day or two. Earlier, the authorities allow erecting Vinayagar statue after obtaining permission from revenue (RDO) and police department,” said Tamilisai told TOI.
