Immanuel Sekaran guru puja passed off peacefully in Madurai and Virudhunagar districts on Tuesday with volunteers, who proceeded to Paramakudi through these districts in over 850 vehicles, adhering to rules and regulations laid down by revenue and police officials.
“The event was peaceful in both the districts and no untoward incident has been reported,” said Deputy Inspector General of Police (Madurai Range) Pradip Kumar.
A total of 427 vehicles passed through the check-post put up by Madurai rural district police near Viraganoor. Only those vehicles that had been registered with the respective police stations and had passes with the details of the owners were allowed to pass through the check-post.
“While the police personnel checked the vehicles for weapons and liquor bottles, the Transport department officials made online verification of the genuineness of the type of vehicles,” Additional Superintendent of Police K.G. Narasimhavarman said.
With Ramanathapuram district administration having promulgated prohibitory order under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, no hired vehicles were allowed to carry volunteers. The police did not allow the volunteers to carry long sticks that were used to tie flags of various organisations and political parties.
Vehicles of political leaders like Puthiya Tamilagam president K. Krishnasamy and Tamilaga Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam founder John Pandian were provided police escort.
Virudhunagar
Virudhunagar Superintendent of Police M. Rajarajan said over 441 vehicles passed through Mandapasalai junction in Virudhunagar district. Besides, a large number of volunteers went to Paramakudi in 52 buses.
The vehicle check by the police was videographed. “By and large, the volunteers of all vehicles cooperated with the police,” the SP said. Executive Magistrates were posted in all the check-posts at the district border, he added.
