CHENNAI: Police arrested nine college students for cheating a supermarket owner at Thoraipakkam here of Rs 3 lakh by using a spoofing app after buying eatables and packed items in the last three months.
Every time after making purchase, the students showed supermarket owner Velraj alias Saravanan the tick mark on the app which suggested they payment had been made.

Later, Saravanan checked his bank account and found that there was a shortage of about Rs 3 lakh. He realised that money from the students’ account had not been transferred to his.

When he asked two of the students -- Kishan, 19, and Stanley, 19 -- about this, they told him that it might take some time to transfer the money from their bank account to Saravanan’s account.

Later, Saravanan filed a police complaint against the students. Police questioned the students and learnt that they had been cheating the shop owner by showing a spoof app.

Police registered a cheating case and arrested the nine students. They were remanded in judicial custody.
