Police search Swan River after foot chase

Police divers are understood to be involved in a search of the Swan River in Maylands after a group of youths entered the river after an alleged foot chase.

About 3.15pm Monday police responded to reports of several youths jumping fences near Tranby Road and Clarkson Road in Maylands.

Police spotted several youths and chased them on foot.

Some of the youths entered the Swan River near Tranby Road to evade police.

Police said it was not yet known if they all made it out of the water safely.

Some were taken into custody.

Water police boats were deployed to the search area.

Nine News' Michael Genovese said when he arrived on the scene water police were in a search pattern  up and down the river in Maylands but had since been stationary in the middle of the river.

He said an ambulance had arrived and was waiting a couple of hundreds metres from where the boat was stationed.

Anyone with information was asked to call police on 131 444.
