CHANDIGARH: After a gap of two days, Chandigarh traffic police might resume challaning helmetless women riders from Monday. Traffic officials said the department had paused the special drive for challaning women traffic offenders on Friday and Saturday. “We did not conduct any special drive on the two days, but we may resume from this week. We have come to believe that there is a need for spreading awareness among women riders as we found out that many of them were not even aware that riding without helmet is now an offence in Chandigarh,” said a senior officer of the traffic department.

Amid opposition from some groups, the traffic department had launched the drive against helmetless women riders on September 5 and issued challans to 290 women riders for not wearing helmets. Before launching the drive, the department had carried out numerous awareness drives in the city, informing women riders about safety and the new law. According to traffic officials, there was still a need for more such drives.
