When one enters Matha Kovil Main Road, it leads to Viswanathan Nagar, a quiet locality in K. Pudur (Ward 45). Quiet it is, but civic issues are in abundance here.
Roads here have been dug by the Corporation for laying drinking water pipelines in the past six months. But the roads have not been re-laid. J. Sudha, a resident, said, “We dread monsoon as rainwater stagnates on these roads, partcularly on Viswanathapuram First and Third streets and Kanni Mariamman Koil Street.” She said the residents complained to the civic authorities about the poor quality of roads many times but there was no favourable response yet.
M. Shiekh Masthan, president of Viswanathan Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association, said it was a common sight to see overflowing underground drainage in the Pudur area. “On days when it rains, the sewage overflows and stagnates on the streets, causing stench. It is also a health hazard,” he said.
There is no door-to-door collection of garbage here. D. Nagasundaram, another resident, said conservancy workers removed garbage twice a week. On other days, one could see mounds of waste rotting on street corners. The ward is supplied with drinking water once in four days, causing major hardship for the residents.
A corporation official said a plan to repair roads was in an advanced stage and work orders would be released soon.
Water supply had been regularised in many parts of the ward and more dumper bins would be placed in the Pudur area to prevent people from dumping garbage on the roadside.
