A village in Meghalaya’s North Garo Hills district has slapped a fine of ₹3,000 on a woman after her former boyfriend uploaded her semi-nude images and videos on social media.
The village elders also ordered her to pay ₹1,500 to a local club as “atonement” for her “sin.”
The woman had filed an FIR at the Mendipathar Police Station on August 30 against one Mansrang Sangma of village Gairong. The man, she said, uploaded the video when she broke off the relationship. “During my relationship with him, he took my video without my knowledge. I happened to see the video and told him to delete it. But he has not deleted the video and the pictures,” she said in the complaint. In fact, when she called him, he threatened to circulate them “even more.”
“Instead of helping her, a victim of cybercrime, the elders of her village summoned her to a community meeting on September 7 and asker her to pay the penalty,” Agnes Kharshiing of the rights group, Civil Society Women’s Organisation, told The Hindu.
The local police said the man who uploaded the objectionable videos has been arrested.
