Thiruvananthapuram: The
election to the posts of heads of three standing committees of the city
corporation council will be held on Tuesday.
BJP and UDF have decided to contest the elections and have fielded candidates for all posts enabling LDF to bag a clear advantage at the onset. UDF had earlier desisted from election for the chairman post of town planning standing committee.
In Welfare standing committee, Remya Remesh, ward councillor, Pattom will be the candidate for BJP while UDF will field Maya R S, ward councillor, Kuravankonam.
Hima Siji, ward councillor, Karikkakom will contest as BJP candidate in public works standing committee and C Omana who represents Mulloor ward will be the UDF candidate.
Bindhu S, Chandavila councillor will be the UDF candidate in education and sports standing committee and BJP will have Karamana Ajith as the candidate.
BJP will contest the elections under M R Gopan, who has replaced Girikumar as the party council leader. The replacement has not gone down well with a section of BJP councillors who felt that Girikumar was alienated while making decisions and he was forced to request for replacement. The leaders of UDF and BJP said that they were fielding candidates in all the standing committees to dispel any reports of collusion between BJP and LDF.
LDF, which has put off selection of candidates for three standing committees, will hold a series of meetings from Tuesday morning to finalize the candidates. Sources hinted that seasoned member of corporation council and former chairperson of health committee S Pushpalatha might be in the fray for election to chairperson post of works standing committee. Sindhu S S, ward councillor, Medical College, may get the call to contest for the post of welfare standing committee head. While two names are being considered for candidature in education and sports standing committee , C Sudharsanan may be the LDF candidate. The LDF camp has been tight-lipped about the choices and they want the final picture to be clear just before the election to douse rumors.
The sudden resignation of three heads of standing committees had caused a furore among LDF councillors and party even had to face tough questions during the meeting. Although all the former heads who followed party directive and quit the posts had remained quiet about the resignation, some of them had openly expressed their dissent over the need for resignation despite putting in good performance.
