IPS officer who attempted suicide loses battle for life

KANPUR: The 30-year-old IPS officer who had allegedly attempted suicide by consuming poison died on Sunday after battling for life for five days. IPS officer Surendra Kumar Das' brother, Narendra, accused his wife of abetting the suicide and said the family would lodge an FIR against her. Das was found unconscious in his house on Wednesday after he allegedly consumed aluminium phosphide (celphos) tablets. A note was recovered from the scene mentioning "family issues" as the reason behind the suicide attempt.
"The letter stated that he was taking the extreme step because of family issues. The letter was addressed to his wife and further stated that he loved her a lot. At the end of the letter, it stated that no one else was responsible for it (suicide)," a police officer said.

Kanpur SSP Anant Deo had earlier stated that preliminary findings indicated that Das the IPS officer was in acute depression for the past few days. and did not talk to his mother for the past 40 days. "He had consumed around 25 grams of celphos used for killing rats after he had some dispute with his wife," he said.

Das, a 2014 batch officerwas transferred to Kanpur in August this year and was posted as an SP (East).
