September 11, 2001 - a day the world will never forget. A day of grief and devastation, but also of courage and heroism. When terrorists hijacked planes and deliberately flew them into major landmarks in the United States. Masterminded by Osama bin Laden's terror group al-Qaida, hijackers crashed the first American Airlines plane into the World Trade Centre's North Tower, and soon after flew a United Airlines plane into the South Tower. All the passengers on both planes were killed, along with some 2,600 in the towers and surrounding areas, as well as paramedics, firefighters and police officers. A third plane destroyed part of the Pentagon, while a fourth crashed in Pennsylvania after the passengers fought with the hijackers. Nearly 3,000 lost their lives and over 6,000 were injured that day.
