Nagpur: The Bajaj Nagar police were too busy in Pola festival security and bandh bandobast on Monday to summon for investigations a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) cop driving the vehicle that killed 52-year-old Devidas Gudadhe on Saturday at Gopal Nagar. Even on Sunday, the cops had delayed for 24 hours registration of an offence of causing death due to negligence against the driver of the CRPF vehicle.
Devidas was crossing the road in front of Reliance Fresh Supermarket at Gopal Nagar after handing over a tiffin to his son Pankaj. He was hit by a Bolero jeep of the CRPF unit at Hingna coming from the direction of Matey Chowk. The accident had flung Devidas some distance away.
Devidas, a cycle rickshaw puller, was crossing the road to reach his vehicle parked under a tree. He was hit right in front of his son Pankaj, who worked as a security guard at an apartment. Devidas used to regularly come to give Pankaj the tiffin.
The CRPF driver, who was behind the wheels, had helped Pankaj rush the injured Devidas to a hospital at Shankar Nagar. However, he was referred to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), where he was later declared dead.
Pankaj had informed the police about the role of the CRPF personnel in the accident. Despite having the name of the CRPF staffer involved, Bajaj Nagar police preferred to register an offence against unidentified person on Saturday.
Senior PI of Bajaj Nagar Dnyaneshwar Patil admitted the name and contact number of the CRPF personnel is already with the cops. “We opted to wait for a day to summon the CRPF cops since there were other more pressing engagements, including providing security for the Pola festival, and also tackling the bandh call on Monday. Necessary action will be initiated against the driver soon,” he said.
