A Soweto police officer is recovering in hospital after he was shot and wounded in the early hours of Monday morning.

This, after two occupants in a van opened fire on officers after they ordered the vehicle to stop on the N12 during a routine check.

"A constable sustained wounds to his lower abdomen and legs. The second member escaped unscathed. The wounded member is currently in hospital in a stable condition," Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said in a statement on Monday.

Last Friday, a commemoration was held at the Union Buildings in Pretoria for 29 police officers who had been killed over the past year in the line of duty.

"The attacks on police will be treated even more seriously in future, with such perpetrators never seeing the light of day again. Just last week, a cop killer was sentenced to life imprisonment in the Northern Cape province," Police Minister Bheki Cele said at the gathering.

The motive behind Monday's shooting is yet to be determined and no arrests have been made yet.
