Backlog students pass on cut-off date, denied admission

Nagpur: In a clear case of injustice by Nagpur University (NU), a large number of final year students from several undergraduate courses like BA, BSc, BCom, BSW, BPharm etc have been denied admission to postgraduate courses despite clearing backlog papers in reassessment of their answersheets for the exams held this summer.
The NU had set September 6 as the final cut off for all types of admissions as per its norms. At the same time, the NU has given exemption to Bachelor of Education (BEd) and LLB admissions, which are confirmed till late October.

Known for delaying reassessment results by over a year, the NU this time had managed to declare most of such results within a couple of months. Several final year students don’t know whether to celebrate their pass result as it was declared on the last day of admissions — September 6.

The NU has started releasing the reassessment results from August 1 onwards. The candidates successful in reassessment had no problem in getting admissions as the NU had extended the deadline after its online centralized admission process (CAP) closed on July 31.

Hoping to get some relief, the aggrieved students and parents even met vice chancellor SP Kane, who reportedly told them that no more admissions could be permitted after September 6. Kane didn’t answer to TOI’s calls.

Adding to the woes, the NU had also declared withheld results and students passing in them too may lose an academic year. Also, several students who had opted for BEd and couldn’t land a seat are facing a similar fate.

Parents and students said the state board also holds supplementary exams and announces the result in August to save students from losing academic year. “If the state board can do it, why can’t the university take a lesson from it. Its double standards too have come to fore. It is allowing BEd and Law admissions but can’t given exemption to those clearing papers on September 6,” parents told TOI.

The exam section and the college section could have co-ordinated to save such students from losing a year, teachers said.

Director, board of Examinations and Evaluation, Neeraj Khaty said the exam section has been doing its best to declare reassessment results as soon as possible. But, he didn’t give any assurance for the aggrieved students. “The university will go as per norms,” Khaty said.

NU officials said though admissions are not allowed beyond September 6, those for BEd and Law go on till late October.

Khaty said admissions to both professional courses — BEd and LLB — are conducted by the government and therefore NU is compelled to given them exemption.
