MUMBAI: The Bombay high court on Friday began final hearing on a petition against tunnelling by
Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd under two of Mumbai’s heritage Atash Behrams.
In his submissions before a bench of acting Chief Justice Naresh Patil and Justice R G Ketkar, senior counsel Navroz Seervai, representing the petitioners, argued since the entire premises, including the ground, was consecrated, the tunnel ought to shift by 3.5 or 4 metres more.
Metro counsel S G Aney showed plans of the modified tunnels and said, “We made a 3.5 m shift…there can be no further alignment. If we shift more, it will be wholly under road…We have to maintain distance between tracks.”
The HC has stayed tunnelling till September 18.
