Illegal shops holding up Bajghera bridge razed

GURUGRAM: MCG on Friday removed encroachments from government land in Bajghera to pave the way for speedy completion of an under-construction railway over-bridge there.
Acting on a directive from the Punjab and Haryana high court, a team, led by MCG joint commissioner Vivek Kalia, razed around 22 structures, mostly shops, during a drive in the day.

Around 200 police personnel, including 50 women cops, were present during the dive to avoid any untoward incident. “Though there was some initial resistance by the local people, we managed to explain them the situation and carry out the drive peacefully,” said an MCG official.

The construction of the railway over-bridge has been going on for over two years now. Sources said the project had been delayed because some residents had approached court against demolition of their properties, which were posing hurdle to the bridge being developed by the public works department.

Though the high court ordered demolition of illegal shops blocking the work, the final judgement in the case is still awaited. MCG has been given the responsibility to remove the squatters and file a report in the court by September 20. Around 150 shops were demolished in the area for the same project in December last year too.

The delay has been causing problems for residents living in the new sectors, who often complain about congestion. Apart from connectivity, the construction has also hit essential services such as sewage lines and street lights in parts of Palam Vihar.
