MANGALURU: The all-around misery caused by recent deluge in neighbouring Kodagu has touched a raw chord with 7-lakh-odd
Arya Vysya community families across Karnataka. The community under the aegis of Karnataka Arya Vysya Mahasabha will reach out to the rain battered district by adopting a village and 2 crore as a financial assistance.
S R Kubera Setty, director of Karnataka Arya Vysya Mahasabha and president, Karavali Sree Kanyakaparameshwari Arya Vysya Sangha said Mahasabha has responded to similar natural calamity in Karnataka in the past by coming to aid of flood victims in Raichur in 2009. The present trail of destruction in pockets across Kodagu is heart-wrenching and as a community, we have decided to do our bit to help the people in need in our own way, he said.
“This we felt was a better way to do so rather than contributing the amount so pooled to the government which has its own way of functioning,” he said, adding need of the hour is to provide immediate succour to the affected and Mahasabha intends to complete the task in six months.
A dozen tasks chalked out for the village to be adopted include repairs of houses of flood victims, re-connecting power supply to the village and households with help of local Escom, make arrangements for potable drinking water, steps to help aid the disrupted education of children. This includes repair of damaged classrooms, providing furniture where necessary, text books, notebooks and stationery items to students, Kubera Setty explained.
Plan also includes making transportation arrangements to help students go to nearest school, he said. The aid will also take care of animals and cattle, Setty added. We also have drawn plans to provide basic agricultural equipment to help people restart their lives, he said. Those who are interested in helping this cause may remit funds to Sangha’s account at Corporation Bank, Kavoor branch, account number 520101002035266, IFSC code CORP0000711.
