BENGALURU: In the first cybercrime conviction in Karnataka, a Bengaluru court on Friday held a 40-year-old techie guilty of creating morphed nude pictures of a woman friend and emailing them with objectionable statements to her and others. He’s been handed a two-year jail term.

The I ACMM court also slapped a fine of Rs 25,000 on Shivaprasad Sajjan, 38, a resident of Bagalkot. The conviction comes 17 years after the cybercrime station was set up in the Central Investigation Department. The CID sleuths had probed the case and submitted a chargesheet.

A techie with a private firm in Bengaluru, Sajjan was arrested after the woman filed a complaint with police that he had created her nude pictures in 2008.

The case was transferred to the cybercrime wing of the CID, where a case was registered under the Information Technology Act section 67 (punishment for publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form).

Now, principal films himself in the nude

SM Ramesh, principal of District Institute of Education and Training, Bengaluru North, was on Friday suspended for allegedly uploading a video on a WhatsApp group of DIET officials. Police said he filmed himself in the nude and posted the clip on Teacher’s Day that went viral. The education department termed the incident “disgraceful”.

Man had sent emails from Rajajinagar cyber cafe

Investigations revealed that Sajjan had sent the emails from a cyber café in Rajajinagar in the city.

“Those were the days when we didn’t have CCTVs everywhere. The café owner did not bother to note down the name or contact details of users. Finally, we tracked the convict after tracing him through the email that he had sent to many friends,” police said.

“Sajjan and the woman were friends from the time they were studying in a Benglauru college. But their relationship had soured over personal differences. The woman could not find a job and left for her hometown Delhi. Sajjan decided to defame the woman as she distanced herself from him. Using the computer, he morphed the woman’s pictures to create her nude photographs and emailed them to her, his friends and others,” police said.

After coming out on bail, Sajjan had resigned from his job, studied LLB and become an advocate to fight his case, sources said. During the hearing, the woman’s father came to Bengaluru from Delhi to follow up the case.
