Colva: Goa Tourism Development Corporation’s (GTDC) failure to repair the retaining wall between the Colva creek and the sea has resulted in additional destruction of the beach.
On August 19, STOI had highlighted the collapse of the retaining wall meant to direct the flow of water to and from the sea to the Colva creek. However, the failure of the authorities to take cognizance of this has resulted in the
laterite stones being washed away. They now lie strewn on the shore, inconveniencing visitors to the beach.
At the broken section of the wall, the tidal movement has resulted in severe sand erosion of a depth of nearly one-and-half-metre.
As a result of this, the beach, on the side of the Colva Residency, has become inaccessible to the public.
Ironically, GTDC’ s south Goa office is located in the Colva Residency.
A team of
engineers sent by GTDC chairman
Nilesh Cabral to inspect the destruction on August 4, had promised that work would be taken up after requisite permission is obtained from the
coastal regulation zone authority.
