A collection drive for furniture and home appliances to be distributed to the needy people in flood-hit regions began on Manaveyaam Veedhi on Friday evening. The drive is being jointly organised by the Rotary International and the Institute of Indian Interior Designers, as part of their project ‘Mission New Life’ to lend a helping hand to those who have lost all their belongings in the flood.
On Saturday, large number of sofas, chairs, beds, fridges, television sets, mixer grinders, fans, gas stove, dining tables and other home furniture were brought in by individuals and institutions.
Survey
“We are planning to carry out a survey in some of the flood-hit areas to assess the need for each of these things. We are also maintaining a detailed inventory of the stuff collected here. A mobile application has been developed to collect all these together. The items will be supplied to specific households as per need,” says Jayakrishnan, an architect, and a member of the Rotary club.
Some of the furnitures being brought in need repair work. This will be done in the workshops of the Interior Designers’ Institute. The unusable ones will be disposed of.
The collection centre will be open on Sunday too, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Separate collection centres have also been opened at Rotary Institute at Vazhuthcaud, Rotary Towers at Poonthi Road, District Cooperative Bank building at Ambalamukku, Regional Institute of Engineering at Perunthanni, and opposite the Akshaya Centre on the Kulangara Temple road, Kazhakuttam
