SURAT: A manhunt has been launched by police for unidentified thieves who escaped with diamonds worth Rs17.16 lakh and Rs38,000 cash from a diamond trader’s office in Katargam here on Thursday.
Prakash Megji Parmar, 30, diamond trader, in his complaint registered at Katargam police station said some thieves entered his office in the house of Sanjay Modi in the wee hours of September 6 and escaped with diamonds worth Rs17,16,129 and Rs38,000 cash.

A police officer said, “The office is very small. Its lock was found broken along with the glass. When the thieves had entered the office after breaking its lock, there was no reason for them to break its glass. Things look suspicious.”

The locality has plenty of small diamond traders and the combined value of diamonds with them would not be more than Rs17 lakh, he said, adding that they are thoroughly investigating this case.

Another police officer said there are no CCTV cameras in the vicinity where the office is located. However, police are looking into the footages of CCTV cameras installed on a road located at a distance from the diamond trader’s office.
