Vadodara: Barodians will soon be able to register a case at cybercrime police station if they are conned online or if their email or social media accounts are hacked and expect early detection of cases.
A cybercrime cell which is under the detection of crime branch (DCB) has been upgraded to cybercrime unit and the city police department is awaiting a formal notification from the state government to convert it into a police station.
“The government has handed over equipment worth Rs 50 lakh for cybercrime unit which will help in detecting cases early be it about social media or online frauds,” said city police commission Anupam Singh Gahlaut.
The cybercrime cell had strength of three officials, but with the establishment of cybercrime unit, it has been increased to 15. Among the recent new recruitments of police constables, nine police constables, who had education background of computer engineering, have been shifted to cybercrime unit. A police inspector and two police sub-inspectors have also been appointed.
Gahlaut added that one post of assistant commissioner of police has also been sanctioned and an official will be soon appointed. Once the unit will be converted to police station, the strength will increase to 60 and the cases will not have to be registered at DCB police station.
In 2015 too city police department had sent a proposal to state government to have a dedicated police station for cybercrime, but the police was never approved. Surat police had started a cybercrime police station in July this year.
