Gurgaon: A
sports complex with facilities on a par with Olympics standards could take shape in the city in a few years.
Huda completed demarcation of land for the project this week and it will soon hand it over to
MCG, which is expected to complete
construction by 2021.
Chief minister Manohar Lal
Khattar had announced the construction of an Olympics-standard sports
complex in June 2016. A total of 11.7 acres of land were earmarked for the sports complex the same year. Later, the area allotted for the project was increased and Huda acquired around 30 acres of land in sectors 52-53 for the purpose. The site is near
Tau Devi Lal Biodiversity Park in Wazirabad village.
“The plots at the site are in a zigzag shape. To mark the four corners of a plot for the dimensional plan, an actual on-site demarcation will be done on Saturday, after which we will hand over the site to MCG,” said HS Jakhar, executive engineer, Huda.
The corporation has been given the responsibility of building the complex, which will cost a minimum of Rs 100 crore. According to MCG officials, the final proposal is yet to be prepared, but there are plans to have a multi-storey building with courts for badminton, basketball and volleyball, stadiums for hockey and football, a wrestling ring and an Olympic-size swimming pool, along with other sports and games arena. A hostel will also be built for sportspersons who will stay and practise for tournaments. According to officials, the plan is to have infrastructure in which Olympic-level tournaments can be organised for a large audience.
All courts and stadiums in the complex will be constructed as per Olympic specifications. After the complex is complete, the Indian Olympic Association is likely to conduct an inspection to check if it conforms to Olympic standards.
MCG is expected to prepare the final proposal for the project by the end of this month, which will be sent for the approval to the state government. Once approved, the tender for construction will likely be finalised by end of this year. “The proposal and the estimate has to be prepared and approved first. Once the tenders are allotted, it will take around two years to build the complex, and we are hoping for an early 2021 deadline,” said Dharambir Malik, executive engineer, MCG.
