MANGALURU: Chief minister HD Kumaraswamy said the government was committed for economic development of
Mangaluru.
Speaking to reporters after holding a district level review meeting here on Friday, the CM said the government will focus on development of Mangaluru since it is next to Bengaluru when it comes to revenue generation in the state. He said discussions were held on various issues related to
Dakshina Kannada district including flood, natural calamities, loss of life, destruction of properties, roads, sea erosion and problems of
endosulfan victims.
“Officials and people’s representatives have brought to my notice about the burning issue of sand shortage in the district. People are facing difficulties to construct houses and toilets because of sand shortage. Within a week, I will hold a meeting of people’s representatives from this region and officials of the department of mines and geology in Bengaluru to solve the sand shortage crisis,” Kumaraswamy said.
On people’s representatives’ demands of permanent compensation for endosulfan victims in the district, the CM said he has directed deputy commissioner S Sasikanth Senthil to submit a detailed report on endosulfan victims and their problems. “We will discuss and decide on sanctioning permanent relief for endosulfan victims and their family members,” he said.
The CM said the district has suffered loss to the tune of Rs 230 crore because of heavy rains, which was 128% more than normal rains, and flood this year. The district has Rs 25 crore in its natural calamity fund and the DC has been given free hand to utilize it, he added.
On Shiradi Ghat, Kumaraswamy said the government will explore all possible options to make traffic between Mangaluru and Bengaluru smooth. The proposals including a tunnel road between two cities are under consideration, he said.
