VADODARA: For several years now, the police department has been urging pandal organizers to limit the height of Ganesh idols and go for eco-friendly idols.
However this year the traffic cops have taken upon themselves to ensure that more eco-friendly Ganesh idols are installed in the pandals. The cops will distribute 101 earthen Ganesh idols to the pandals this Sunday.

“These idols have been made by under-privileged kids over last few days. We will distribute them to the pandal organizers and insist that they install eco-friendly idols in the coming years. Also, we have roped in several schools from the city that will also donate eco-friendly Ganesh idols to pandals,” said Amita Vanani, assistant commissioner of police (traffic).

An exhibition of the Ganesha idols made by these children has been organized on Sunday at Ved Transcube Plaza along with posters of traffic safety.

City police commissioner (in-charge), Manoj Sashidhar too will attend the exhibition. “It will not just spread awareness about importance of conserving environment while celebrating festivals among the pandal organizers but also make children aware. We have organized this programme jointly with Chhatra Sansad,” Vanani added. The traffic police have donated Rs 50,000 for the initiative.

Kunal Sharma, president of Chhatra Sansad said that nearly 100 schools from the city have collaborated with them for the Bache Boley Morya Campaign. “A team of sculpture artists from the city took a nine-day workshop of the under-privileged kids who made these eco-friendly Ganesha idols,” Sharma said.
