Police inquiring with relatives; CCTV footage being scanned

Mumbai: A senior citizen, who was staying alone in south Mumbai, was found murdered near his flat on Tuesday morning.

Aja Lama (75) was staying in his first floor apartment of Sant Niwas building on Shahid Bhagat Singh Marg. “Around 10 a.m. on Tuesday, a resident of the building was on his way up to the terrace when he saw Lama lying in a pool of blood in the staircase leading up to the first floor. He called the police, after which we sent a team to the building,” an officer at MRA Marg police station said.

Lama was taken to St George Hospital near Crawford Market where he was declared dead before admission. Post-mortem indicated that he had been stabbed in the chest with a sharp object, leading to his death.

“As he used to stay alone, we are not sure whether something was stolen from the house, and hence, robbery as a motive has not been ruled out as yet. The house, however, was not ransacked and the door was locked from outside,” Sanjay Kamble, senior police inspector, MRA Marg police station, said.

The police are making inquiries with some of Lama’s relatives, who stay in Dombivli, to find out if he was embroiled in any disputes. They are also checking with residents of the building to find out if any of them saw any suspicious persons entering or leaving the building on Tuesday morning. Inquiries are also being made with shopkeepers around the building while CCTV footage are being scanned.

A case of murder under the Indian Penal Code has been registered against unknown persons.
