LUCKNOW: A debt-ridden farmer, carrying tricolour, reached the tehsil office of Mohanlalganj in Lucknow, and tried to immolate himself.

The farmer claimed that his crop had got damaged in the heavy rains and the tehsil officials had not paid heed to his application for loan.

Kaushal Kishore, 50, of Balsingh Kheda village of Mohanlalganj, reached the tehsil office around 1.30pm on Tuesday.

He poured kerosene on his body and shouted that he was going to immolate himself as he had no money left to repay his debt.

However, before Kishore could set himself afire he was overpowered by the policemen present at the tehsil office. Police said Kishore had taken a loan of Rs 1.5 lakh but his crop got damaged in the heavy rains this monsoon. Kishore had demanded compensation from the state government under Kisan Bima Yojana.

SDM Mohanlalganj Surya Kant Tripathi said Kishore’s application has been accepted and his case would be heard on September 12
