NEW DELHI: Equity markets on Thursday opened in the green after six successive days of losses, as pharma and finance sector stocks firmed up

30-share BSE Sensex gained 224.50 points to close at 38,242.81 while the broader 50-share NSE Nifty finished trading at 11,536.90, up 59.95 points. Both the indices gained more than half a per cent.

The markets opened on a volatile note in the morning, as Sensex gained nearly 150 points at the opening bell, before slipping in the red. However, the Street staged a comeback in the last couple of hours.

Meanwhile, the rupee hit a new low in intra-day trading, breacing the crucial 72-mark against the US dollar.

The Nifty Pharma sub-index gained 2.72 per cent during the day.

Reliance, Coal India, Sun Pharma and PowerGrid stocks were the top performers.
