Sensex gained 224.50 points to close at 38,242.81 while the broader 50-share NSE
Nifty finished trading at 11,536.90, up 59.95 points. Both the indices gained more than half a per cent.
The markets opened on a volatile note in the morning, as Sensex gained nearly 150 points at the opening bell, before slipping in the red. However, the Street staged a comeback in the last couple of hours.
Meanwhile, the
rupee hit a new low in intra-day trading, breacing the crucial 72-mark against the US dollar.
The Nifty Pharma sub-index gained 2.72 per cent during the day.
Reliance, Coal India,
Sun Pharma and PowerGrid stocks were the top performers.
