The owner of the godown which caught fire on Tuesday evening leaving two dead and nine injured was arrested on Wednesday, the police said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini) Rajneesh Gupta said that the accused, identified as Rakesh Sharma, was arrested from his residence in Patparganj in the early hours.

Around 4.30 p.m. on Tuesday a mini truck parked outside the godown in Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar caught fire after a chemical-filled drum blasted. The fire engulfed the multi-storey Godown.

A case under Sections 285 (negligent conduct with respect to fire or combustible matter), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life), 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code was registered.

The police said that the godown was supposed to be used as a transit point and not for storage of chemicals. The material was to be unloaded and then transported across the city. “The lapses are being investigated and verified,” Mr. Gupta said.

The post-mortem of deceased Kuldeep Singh and Bishan Lal was conducted and the bodies were handed over to their families on Wednesday. The injured are undergoing treatment.
