‘They play vital role in moulding children’

Cautioning teachers from getting corrupted, Nalin Kumar Kateel, MP, said here on Wednesday that corruption among teachers would affect students, which, in turn, will affect the country’s development.

At the Teachers’ Day programme organised by Mangaluru North Block, Mr. Kateel reminded teachers that they were in a profession involved in moulding the minds of the younger generation. As students keenly follow their teachers, it was important for teachers to maintain an upright conduct, he said.

Ivan D’Souza, MLC, said corruption could be effectively removed with the active support of teachers and parents. Ruing the continued downfall of the teacher-student relationship, Mr. D’Souza said this had led to teachers being taken out of the role of disciplining students involved in communal incidents. He said the government should give top priority to resolving issues concerning teachers.

In her keynote address, Vijaya Kumari, Head of Department of Mathematics, Vijaya College, Mulki, asked teachers to keep their problems aside and work with a cool mind in schools.

The district-level Teachers’ Day programme was held at Sullia in which MLA S. Angara and Deputy Director of Public Instruction Y. Shivaramaiah took part. Mr. Angara presented the Best Teacher award to 20 persons.

At Shakti Residential School in Shakti Nagar, Mangaluru, six retired teachers were felicitated. Special needs children presented a cultural programme at Saanidhya Residential School, Shakti Nagar, as part of the celebrations.

In Udupi, Dinakar Babu, president of the zilla panchayat, said on Wednesday that teachers played a vital role in building a good society.

He was speaking after inaugurating a Teachers’ Day programme.

The district-level Best Teacher awards and district-level Achiever Teacher awards were presented on the occasion. Teachers of unaided schools and retired teachers were also felicitated.

G. Shankar, philanthropist, said teachers were a model to the entire society. Elected representatives should solve the problems of teachers by bringing them to the notice of the government, he said.

K. Raghupati Bhat, MLA, presided over the function.

Sheela K. Shetty, vice-president of the zilla panchayat, and Nalini P. Rao, president of Udupi Taluk Panchayat were present.
