Dow's gain belies bad market breadth

The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.03% has swung to a gain of 30 points in early-afternoon trade, erasing an earlier loss of as much as 81 points, but broader-market internals are painting a fairly negative picture. The number of advancing stock is leading decliners 1,618 to 1,204 on the NYSE and 1,745 to 926 on the Nasdaq exchange. And volume in declining shares is accounting for about 51% of total volume on the NYSE and for 56% of total volume on the Nasdaq. Within the Dow, 20 of 30 Dow stocks are trading higher, with advancing volume leading declining volume 156.8 million shares to 102.7 million shares. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 SPX, -0.47% was down 0.2% and the Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.94% was shedding 0.9%.
