Some have cut daily expenses, others started using apps that offer cashback

From cutting down other expenses to using payment apps that offer benefits, Delhiites are finding ways to deal with increasing prices of diesel and petrol, which touched a new high on Tuesday.

With petrol price touching ₹79.4, the highest-ever in Delhi, consumers said they were feeling the pinch.

While having his scooter refuelled at a petrol pump in central Delhi, Abdullah said: “I have reduced the quantity of milk I buy by half-a-litre per day in order to meet the increase in expenditure due to the constant petrol price hike over the past few days.”

Another consumer Manish, who works as a sales executive at a corporate firm, said he was worried about successive increase in prices.

“I have seen an average hike of ₹1,500 to ₹2,000 per month in my fuel expenditure this year. What worries me is that this exponential rise has occurred within a year,” he said.

For some, it has become difficult to keep track of the daily increase in fuel prices.

“The government increases petrol prices by around 10 paise or 20 paise daily. How is a busy person supposed to keep track of information,” asked Shubham, after getting his two-wheeler refuelled at a Subhash Nagar pump.

To beat the daily fuel price increase, many residents are finding new ways to save money.

Raju, who works as a driver in Punjabi Bagh, said he has been using mobile applications that have reduce his personal fuel expenditure by ₹500 per month. “Every rupee counts, so I have started using apps that offer cashback against a minimum transaction,” he said.
