‘Do not empty toilet tanks mid-air’

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Tuesday informed the National Green Tribunal that circulars had been issued to airlines following orders of the green panel asking them to not empty toilet tanks mid-air.

However, seeking a review of the order passed by the tribunal earlier, the DGCA said that it had become a “laughing stock” due to the circular.

Further, the DGCA maintained that it was “impossible to dump” human waste mid-air.

The DGCA also informed the Bench, headed by NGT chairperson Adarsh Kumar Goel, that post-landing aircrafts are taken to designated spots for emptying the waste and it cannot do so mid-air.

The green panel had directed the DGCA to issue a circular to all airlines operating at the Indira Gandhi International Airport to not empty toilet tanks mid-air.

The directions had come following a plea that had alleged that faeces dumped mid-air by an aircraft had splattered across his south Delhi residence.
