The immense potential of jackfruit in making value-added products even after its season, will be the focus at the two-day “Akala halasu sangama” (Unseasonal jackfruit festival) at B.C. Road from September 8.
Organised by Navachetana Sneha Sangama, Puttur and Akala Halasu Sangama Swagataha Samithi of Bantwal, there will be more than 35 stalls exhibiting and selling jackfruit food.
Products available
Some of the products that will be available are jackfruit seed payasam, dosa made from jackfruit pulp, halwa, chocolate, roti made from brined bulbs, podi from bulbs, its cake, dried raw jackfruit bulbs, dried fruit bulbs, laddu, biriyani mix, honey coated bulbs, chips, happala, ice cream, and the like, according to a release.
The festival at Sparsha Kala Mandira will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Demonstration
There will be demonstration on preparing various food items using jackfruit from 2.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. on Saturday and from 12.30 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Shree Padre, Executive Editor, Adike Pathrike and a crusader for jackfruit, will speak on the vast potential of jackfruit on the inaugural day from 11.30 a.m.
The next day Gabriel Stany Vegas, who has cultivated jackfruit orchard in about 10 acres near Moodbidri, and Shivanna of Sakharayapatna, who has been making value-added products from jackfruit will speak.
