PATNA: A police team from Madhya Pradesh has reached Munger while another team of Munger police has been sent to Jabalpur to probe the seizure of three brand new AK-47 rifles and their spare parts in Jubli Well locality under the
Jamalpur police station area in Munger district on August 29. The seized rifles were smuggled from Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh.
The three rifles, including 30 magazines and spares like pistons, piston springs, recoil springs, body covers and breach locks were seized by two quick mobile constables from one Mohammad Irfan Alam, a resident of Wardha under the Mufassil police station area in Munger. The constables were on routine patrol when they spotted Alam moving suspiciously with a heavy bag after coming out of Jamalpur railway station.
During interrogation, Alam told police that the firearms were brought to Munger from Jabalpur via train. The case has become important for national security as well as intelligence agencies as an ordnance factory is also located at Jabalpur. An arms smuggler, Purushottam, had reached Munger from Jabalpur to deliver the consignment.
Soon after the seizure, top officials of
Bihar police had hinted at handing over the investigation to the National Investigation Agency. Sources said the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) of MP police has also initiated a parallel investigation into the case.
Munger SP (additional charge) Baburam had said parts of these assault rifles cannot be locally manufactured. “Some of the parts are capable of bearing temperature up to 3000 degrees centigrade. Such parts cannot be manufactured in a small gun manufacturing factory,” he said.
According to sources, one Irfan from Munger was supposed to receive the consignment from Alam.
