Thane: The state government may have declared dahi handi as an adventure sport, but a few mandals in the city are now making good use of this platform to spread social awareness on key issues affecting the public at large.
From holding awareness camps in a corner of the dahi handi venue to playing messages on the speaker phone, encouraging govinda troupes to promote a plastic-free Thane, mandals left no stone unturned to motivate residents to abolish the use of the banned material.

An organizing member of Sanskriti Pratishthan at Shashtri Nagar, said, “Since this plastic ban is affecting everyone’s life, we decided to organize a stall near the dahi handi venue which had this ‘reuse, reduce and recycle’ slogan on it. People were coming with their plastic material and loading it here throughout the day. We even made it a point to send alert visitors over the speaker.”

A troupe that had participated at the venue was also seen carrying a banner that read ‘Plastic-free Thane/Plastic-free India’.
