Prof Mohanty gets Biju Excellence Award

Prof Uma Charan Mohanty, Visiting Professor in the School of Earth, Ocean and Climate Sciences (SEOCS) of the Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar, has received the Biju Patnaik Award for Life Time Achievement in Scientific Excellence from Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik here recently.

Prof Mohanty, an eminent academician and researcher in Atmospheric Sciences, was born in Jagatsinghpur district in 1948. He obtained PhD. in Tropical Meteorology from the Odessa Hydro-Meteorological Institute, USSR and served at the IIT Delhi in various capacities. He also served the DST National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting for two years and also the Odisha Bigyan Academy as its President from 2013 to 2015.

His illustrious teaching and research career spans over 45 years during which he has published nearly 270 papers in various national and international journals besides contributing 70 conference papers and several book chapters.

Many awards and recognitions conferred upon Prof Mohanty include Santi Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, National Award in Atmospheric Sciences and Technology, Sir Gilbert Walker Gold Medal, Samanta Chandra Sekhar Award, AR & DB Silver Jubilee Award, 12th Mausam Award, and Prof MG Deshpande Award. He has also been honoured as Fellow of IASC, NASI, INAE, INSA, and IGU, Vice-President of IMS and Senior Associate of ICTP, Italy.
