TIRUCHI
A speeding car, driven by a Public Works Department engineer, ploughed into a group of construction labourers waiting at a bus stop near Sirugamani along Karur-Tiruchi national highway around 7 p.m. on Monday evening, killing three of them.
The car, driven by R. Dayalakumar (50), an Assistant Executive Engineer based in Tiruchi, was on its way to Tiruchi from Karur, said the police.
Police sources said Dayalakumar was driving at high speed and the car ploughed into a group of labourers waiting at the bus stop to return home. While S. Chitra and A. Gomathi died on the spot, Vadivel died on the way to hospital.
The injured – Pappathi and Ranganayaki – are undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Tiruchi. The bodies of the deceased were taken to Mahatma Gandhi Government Hospital for post-mortem.
Pettavaithalai police are investigating. The police detained Dayalakumar, said the sources.
