ALLAHABAD: The city police on Tuesday arrested three criminals for allegedly beating a retired sub-inspector of police to death in full public view in Shilakhana locality under Shivkuti police jurisdiction on Monday morning. The brutal assault was caught on CCTV cameras and it sent shockwaves in the city.
The Allahabad high court took suo moto cognizance of the assault and directed the state government to file a report in this regard by September 5.

Police said Abdul Samad, 68, was beaten to death by three miscreants. Later, his family members filed an FIR against 10 persons. "We have arrested the three prime accused — Yusuf Kamal, Sebu and Ibne — in this connection,” said a police officer.

The incident was captured on CCTV, showing the three miscreants beating the retired cop mercilessly with sticks and iron rods even as people passed by. One of the accused, wearing a red T-shirt, first hit the retired cop with a stick and when he fell with his bicycle, he repeatedly hit him and was later joined by his two accomplices.

The brutality of the attack could be gauged from the footage which shows the retired cop being attacked 49 times in 90 seconds. It also shows that no one dared to intervene.

Deputy SP (Colonelganj) Alok Mishra said, "We have arrested three accused on the basis of the FIR and CCTV footage of the incident. Junaid is a history-sheeter of the area."

Later in the evening, police have also arrested four family members of absconding Junaid including his son, wife and two daughters after their names were mentioned in the FIR.

SP (City) Brajesh Kumar Srivastava told TOI that initial investigation has revealed that the accused were having a property-related dispute with the victim, who was a native of Pratapgarh. He retired from police service in 2006 and was currently living in Shilakhana.

Earlier in the day, the Allahabad high court asked the state government as to why no arrest of the prime suspect had been made in spite of the availability of close circuit television (CCTV) footage of the gruesome incident. Besides, the court also directed the state government to file a report by September 5 apprising it about the action taken so far in the matter.
